Indian River Medical Center (IRMC) welcomes board-certified Medical Oncologist Stephen Patterson, M.D., to its multi-specialty group of physicians.
Dr. Patterson brings with him nearly 25 years of experience in both academic and private practice settings.  He is a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology and an elected board member of the Florida Society of Clinical Oncology. Dr. Patterson has given national lectures, conducted extensive research, participated in clinical trials and published many works on prostate, testicular and bladder cancers as well as metastatic lung cancer. He was also one of the first clinical investigators to study the impact of PD1 modulation in metastatic lung cancer and melanoma, a therapy now curing a percentage of patients with metastatic disease.
Dr. Patterson completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Notre Dame and his graduate studies at the University of South Florida College of Medicine where he earned his medical degree and completed his residency followed by a fellowship in Medical Oncology and Hematology at Moffitt Cancer Center. Dr. Patterson later held an academic appointment at Moffitt Cancer Center where he delivered oncology care and also served as the Chief Medical Information Officer, Director of the Ambulatory Infusion Center, and Chair of the Pharmacy and Therapeutics committee.  He was recruited to the Nevada Cancer Institute as Medical Oncology Fellowship Program Director and helped build their fellowship program. Thereafter he worked at Holy Cross Hospital in Fort Lauderdale as a Medical Oncologist, was the Founding Program Director of its Internal Medicine Residency Program and also served as Chairman of the Cancer Committee.
