Janice Vasallo, R.N., Director of Admission for Hospice by the Sea, Inc., was chosen as Mentor of the Year by the Palm Healthcare Foundation at its 2013 Nursing Distinction Awards Ceremony. She was selected because of her dedication to fostering professional development in others, promoting a positive image of nursing and for serving as an inspiration for nursing advancement.Janice Vasallo believes that “the future of nursing starts with each of us and that it is critical that we lead by our actions and examples.” She spends one-on-one time with new staff to help them navigate through those overwhelming first few weeks on the job and helps her nurses focus on the immediate, no matter how chaotic the situation. She inspires those she manages to strive for higher achievement, believing it is her duty to promote the profession of nursing. Janice constantly assures that patients and families facing some of the most difficult and poignant moments of their lives receive the highest quality care available. She leads by example.
