February 7, 2020 – With an ever-increasing focus on research and advances in the fight against breast cancer, Susan G. Komen Florida is excited to host their first Komen Florida Impact Luncheon at the beautiful Admiral’s Cove on Monday, February 24, 2020. From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. supporters will enjoy a delicious meal while hearing the latest updates that will support Komen’s efforts in reducing breast cancer deaths by 50% before the year 2026.
Co-chairs Sharon Prolow and Sophia Stone welcome WPTV NewsChannel 5 anchor and reporter Tania Rogers as panel moderator. Physician panelists will include medical oncologist Dr. Reshma L. Mahtani and advanced oncology certified nurse practitioner Cathy Marinak. The Komen Florida Impact luncheon is sponsored by FPL and made possible thanks to the generosity of a number of community partners.
Mahtani, a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine, is director of community outreach and co-director of the women’s center at University of Miami’s Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center. Marinak, an advanced practice registered nurse, is a cancer genetics counselor at Good Samaritan Medical Center.
Luncheon guests will be updated on the initiatives Komen Florida is advocating for in our state legislature. Known as the ‘First Responders to Breast Cancer,’ the organization’s focus is on improving access for low-income and uninsured women, women of color, and other vulnerable populations that face barriers to care while providing them with comfort, assurance, and compassionate support.
Kate Watt, Komen Florida’s executive director, says 13,728 women in Florida are diagnosed with breast cancer annually and 2,704 of these will lose their battles with breast cancer. “We’re thrilled that Sharon Prolow and Sophia Stone are serving as to co-chairs this event. With timely access to care for every woman or man affected by this disease, we can continue to reduce breast cancer deaths.”
Susan G. Komen’s Bold Goal is to reduce the nation’s 40,000 breast cancer deaths by 50% by 2026. Local programs funded via Komen Florida include Bethesda Women’s Health Center, Caridad Center, Department of Health-Broward County, Florida Community Health Centers, Genesis Community Health, Lakeside Medical Center, and Martin Memorial Health Systems. In 2018-2019: 45,219 people learned about breast cancer including 24 who were diagnosed; 749 people benefited from diagnostic services such as clinical exams, diagnostic ultrasounds, and biopsies; 77 people received patient navigation services; and 978 people received a screening mammogram.
