Lakeside Medical Center graduated its first class of Family Medicine Residents on June 25, 2013, just two years after its residency program began. The hospital, which is owned and operated by the Health Care District of Palm Beach County, was accredited in 2011 by the American Osteopathic Association to offer the program. It is one of the few family medicine residency programs in the country that trains doctors with a focus on serving the special health needs of rural areas.
More than 70 people attended the graduation of Nader Abdallah, D.O., Midwestern University Chicago College of Osteopathic University; Tarah Freyman, D.O., Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine, Bradenton; and Tricia Nielsen, D.O., Arizona College of Osteopathic Medicine. In a moving ceremony that followed the commencement, the three graduates joined Nikerson Geneve, D.O., Lakeside Medical Center’s Family Medicine Residency Program Director and Director of Medical Education, in presenting five incoming residents with their white doctor’s coats. The program is training a total of 14 residents in postgraduate years one, two and three.
The program’s partners include Nova Southeastern University’s College of Osteopathic Medicine, the Palm Beach County Health Department and Florida Community Health Centers. The Family Medicine Residency Program is funded by a grant from the State of Florida’s Agency for Health Care Administration and support from the Palm Healthcare Foundation.
