However, we understand that while there have been significant advances in breast cancer treatment, much work remains. Clinical trials are a way of getting to where we need to be in the cancer fight, which is why Martin Health has been participating in cancer clinical trials since 2001. That includes numerous trials for breast cancer research, including drug therapies that are now considered standard of care.
Access to clinical trials is important for patients being treated for cancer. By offering clinical trials at Martin Health, we are providing access to cutting edge therapies without the patient having to leave her or his community. This has been extremely beneficial for patients, relieving them of additional travel and cost burdens.
As part of our commitment to developing comprehensive services for breast cancer patients, the inception of Martin Health’s breast health navigator program in 2005 has helped patients tap the resources and support they need right in the place where they are receiving their treatment.
The breast health navigator collaborates with a social worker to help provide a listening ear, assistance with patient needs and facilitation of information. The navigator has knowledge of breast cancer and its treatments, as well as clinical trials that may be available for the patient.
In addition to research and navigation, the Robert and Carol Weissman Cancer Center also offers genetic testing for hereditary breast cancer. This important test can affect the screening, treatment and family of the affected person.
Breast cancer risk is markedly increased with the presence of a genetic mutation. The genetics nurse facilitates genetic counseling and testing to get the information to the patients and their care team in a timely manner.
