Each year, the Chamber of Commerce of the Palm Beaches recognizes businesses for their achievements and contributions to the community. Hospice of Palm Beach County (HPBC) was one of five organizations nominated for the chamber’s newest category, Non-Profit of the Year. Others included Junior Achievement of the Palm Beaches, West Palm Beach Police Athletic League, South Florida Fair and Palm Beach County Expositions and United Way of Palm Beach County.

Matt Lauer, NBC Today Show host, announced the recipient of the 2006 Non-Profit of the Year, via a special videotaped message, at the Chamber’s Business Awards Luncheon. “I would like to say something to all of the people involved with Hospice of Palm Beach County ” said Lauer, an ardent supporter and ambassador-at-large for Hospice of Palm Beach County. “I am thrilled you are getting the recognition you so richly deserve. So, to the all the 850 employees and 600 volunteers who have such a great impact on the lives of the people throughout Palm Beach County, congratulations!” Kelly Burke, chamber’s special events coordinator, arranged with NBC for the taped message. It was a complete surprise for Hospice staff.
