Both Anesthesia and OB/GYN are on Florida’s List of Critically-Needed Specialties

September 27, 2019 – Memorial Healthcare System’s Graduate Medical Education (GME) program is growing again, with two new residency programs, Anesthesia and OB/GYN, now certified by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education.

Memorial is now licensed by ACGME to train doctors in eight specialties, with the first residents for the new programs to arrive next year. On deck to start in July 2020, pending certification, are programs in cardiology, hematology/oncology, and emergency medicine.

“We’ve become a major academic player in the state and place where medical school graduates want to do their training,” said Saima Chaudhry, MD, vice president for academic affairs and chief academic officer for Memorial Healthcare System (MHS). “Within the next few years we expect to have nearly 300 residents enrolled in programs and serving the community at our hospitals.”

Five currently accredited programs at MHS — anesthesia, OB/GYN, neurology, psychiatry, and general surgery — are specialties where the State of Florida has identified a shortage of physicians. The Pembroke Pines-based academic medical center is also training doctors in pediatrics, physical medicine and rehabilitation, and internal medicine. “History shows many of our residents will remain in South Florida after their training, meaning there will be additional specialists to care for the region’s growing and aging population,” said Chaudhry.

The GME program at Memorial has also been approved to provide podiatric residency training by the Council on Podiatric Medical Education and pharmacy residency training by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists.

Memorial Healthcare System is one of the largest public healthcare systems in the U.S. and a national leader in quality care and patient satisfaction. Among the many awards and recognition it has earned are Modern Healthcare magazine’s “Best Place to Work in Healthcare,” Florida Trend’s “Florida’s Best Companies to Work For,” and Becker’s Hospital Review’s “150 Great Places to Work in Healthcare.” In a recent report (“Humanizing Brand Experience”), the Denver-based consulting firm Monigle named Memorial the top health system brand in America, based on consumer surveys.
