For some kids, this summer has been one of fun and relaxation, basking in the sun and keeping up with the latest movie releases. But for 26 teens enrolled in this years Memorial Healthcare System Summer Youth Employment Program, it has been serious work getting a jumpstart in life by getting hands-on-experience in various occupations.
The journey for these teens began in June when they faced corporate-like panel interviews, along with 100 other teens vying for the same job opportunities. All potential applicants provided report cards, school attendance records and a writing sample as part of the interview process. The group was then hired to work for organizations throughout South Broward County, including Memorial Healthcare System, Washington Park Community Center, Davie Boys & Girls Club, Washington Gunzburger Child Care, Koinonia Worship Center, Liberia Economic and Social Development Services, Inc., and Martin Luther King Community Center. They were paid $8.50 an hour, the minimum wage set by Memorial Healthcare System. They also gained something you cant put a price on: the chance for personal growth and development. “Certainly, this program aims to inspire our youths to start planning for their future. With the skills we teach them during this program, we hope to make a difference in their lives forever,” said Nicole Bernard, manager of community benefits for Memorial Healthcare System. “This is just one more way Memorial gives back to our community and supports our youth.” The Summer Youth Employment Program has been going strong for five years, and more than 150 teens have successfully completed it. The program is promoted through community partners and schools in the South Broward area. Job openings also are listed in Memorials website, www.mhs.net four months prior to the end of the school year. “Many of the youths participating in the program come from low-income families, particularly in the targeted areas we serve,” Bernard said. Before the program was completed on July 22, the group was treated to one more workshop on business etiquette, where they learned all the basics of applying for a job from writing an engaging resume to conducting a job-winning interview. The youths who participated are Brian Animashaun, Brian Bernard, Brittany Clark, Shannon Daniels, Destiny Diaz, Quanteria Dixon, Keyerra Franceur, Tim Funchess, Leroy Green, John’ye Hallman, Dijon Hill, Markia Jennings, Crystal McKenzie, Aishan Moore, Omar Pepin, Stephanie Pinon, Leah Rene, Jarad Rhodes, Ryan Rodriguez, Elizabeth Rowry, Gregory Smith, Jasmine Soto, Beatrice Tirado, Karina Velez, Sharita Walker, and Brittany White.
