Eric Freling, M.D.

It’s midnight. Dr. Eric Freling had just settled into bed after a long day of deliveries. Suddenly, the pager goes off in a frenzy. The phone rings.

“I’ll be there in 20 minutes,” he said.

No matter what the call was on the other end, one thing Dr. Freling knew to expect was the miracle of birth. In his 20-something years of practice, he has tallied more than 7,000 births. That number was almost unimaginable when he started his humble career in the classrooms of S.U.N.Y. Downstate Medical Center in New York, where he earned his medical degree in the mid 1970s. Intensive training followed at Tufts University Hospitals, where he completed an internship and residency programs by 1983.

Fast forward four years to 2009 and Dr. Freling has become a driving force in patient safety and customer satisfaction at Memorial Hospital Miramar. As Director of Medical Affairs, he is considered the common denominator behind the success of the hospital’s high marks in patient safety indicators and customer satisfaction. Daily, he rounds on surgical patients and works closely with core measuring teams, tackling issues that affect healthcare quality.

Freling’s work and his natural gift for inspiring team work and cooperation have so far paid off. The hospital recently earned the coveted Press Ganney 2008 Summit Award, for sustaining the highest level of customer satisfaction for three or more consecutive years. Memorial Hospital Miramar, which opened in 2005, was the only hospital in South Florida, and one of only 12 in the country to be recognized for inpatient satisfaction scores.

“I get a chance to impact and enhance the overall quality of care that our patients enjoy, and I get a chance to do it at a whole different level,” Dr. Freling said.
