Dynamic changes in healthcare treatment are leading to a new generation of healthcare medical buildings for the public.

Insurance requirements and medical advances which lessen and even discourage the need for in-hospital treatment has created the necessity for urgent care medical treatment facilities dispersed throughout the community. The buildings are technologically sophisticated, offer non-emergency room care to the public in need, and are part of larger healthcare systems which provide confidence that the treatment received is cutting edge and appropriate.

The new Memorial Urgent Care facility in Hollywood is located on an outparcel in a shopping center on the corner of Sheridan Street and Federal Highway. The design needed to be easily identifiable for the public so it would not be lost in the row of shopping center occupants. The architecture was designed as modern with glass to the north entry facade. The modern design conveys a sense of confidence through openness, and of clean contemporary medical treatment within.

A vestibule, needed for keeping the interior clean, becomes a focal point design element for the public. Since Urgent Cares are sought out under stressful conditions, a clearly defined entrance is an important consideration. The exterior materials include a combination of ceramic tile, metal panels and stucco details to show a sense of proportion and clarify the entry location through a design tower.

As soon as you walk into the facility, the public can sense this is a patient-friendly environment. The waiting area provides openness and visibility of the public by staff. A computer station kiosk ties to the medical records of the Memorial healthcare system.

Efficient treatment areas are clustered around a central nurse station which provides excellent patient visibility and short travel distances across by staff. X-ray and pharmacy rooms add additional medical services for the public. The design evokes similar work relationships and patterns to an ER, but, as an urgent care, treats less complicated, less critical patient medical needs.

The selection of interior finishes were designed with cleanliness and infection control in mind. Ceramic tiles are easily cleaned and similarly, all finishes are selected to not only look good, but to be easily cleaned from possible contaminants. It has been documented that good design improves patient outcomes, promotes staff satisfaction and increases operational efficiency. Good design instills confidence.

This urgent care facility is a welcome addition to provide medical treatment for the people of East Hollywood.
