Leader in cancer treatment and research unveils the name of its world-class community to break ground in 2023

December 15, 2022 – Today Moffitt Cancer Center, a national leader in innovative, comprehensive cancer research at the forefront of revolutionizing the technology and treatment to prevent and cure cancer worldwide, proudly unveils Speros FL as the name of its planned 775-acre global innovation center in Pasco County, Florida. The word Speros is a derivative of the Latin verb, “Sperare,” meaning “to hope” or to “look forward to.” Grounded by principles of accelerated advancement, collaboration, and high-quality care, Speros represents the future of revolutionary cancer treatment at Moffitt.

Located in Pasco County with convenient access to the Tampa International Airport and major interstates, Speros FL will be a monumental-sized campus, featuring 16 million square feet of lab, office, manufacturing, and clinical space, with the potential to add classrooms, teaching kitchens, health clubs and a performing arts center. The historic campus will serve as a convener of the best and brightest minds in cancer research and treatment through deliberate placemaking, open vibrant spaces, and unmatched opportunities for development and growth.

“You cannot separate cancer research and treatment from hope, which is the root of the name Speros FL, and the driving force behind all that we do at Moffitt Cancer Center,” said Dr. Patrick Hwu, President, and CEO. “Our vision is to be the global epicenter for personalized oncology care, and leading research that will revolutionize the way we prevent, find and treat cancer. We look forward to breaking ground on this innovative community and are proud to announce the name, which is an important step in this historic project.”

The state-of-the-art, collaborative center for groundbreaking research is the largest in Moffitt’s 36-year history. Over the course of its 30+-year, multi-phased development, Speros FL will expand Moffitt’s global footprint, and increase its impact exponentially as a dynamic hub for biotech and life sciences enterprises to meet at the intersection of medicine, pharma, education, research, commerce, venture, incubation/acceleration and wellness. Phase one of development is expected to begin in mid-to-late 2023, with the construction of various facilities comprising 650,000 square-feet of the total 1.5 million square feet planned for phase 1, of which at least 300,000 square feet will be dedicated research space.

Since opening its doors in 1986, Moffitt Cancer Center has accumulated a vast breadth of experience in treating more than 100 unique cancers and conditions in patients from all 67 Florida counties, across all 50 states and in more than 130 countries worldwide. In 2022 alone, the center saw more than 598,000 outpatient and screening visits.
