June 7 2022 –  Message from Gino R. Santorio, President & Chief Executive Officer:

We are pleased to welcome Steven Hochwald, MD, MBA, FACS, as the inaugural director of Mount Sinai’s new Irma and Norman Braman Cancer Center. Dr. Hochwald joins our robust and expert team of medical and surgical oncologists, also serving as the chief of surgical oncology and as the assistant director of the Columbia University Medical Center-Mount Sinai Cancer Program.

A leading pancreatic and gastrointestinal surgical oncologist, and an avid researcher, Dr. Hochwald was previously with Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center in New York, an NCI-designated institution. Dr. Hochwald’s extensive research focuses on technical advances in minimally invasive upper gastrointestinal surgeries and on the development of new targets and agents for the treatment of pancreatic and gastroesophageal malignancies.

Dr. Hochwald brings over 30 years of clinical experience and research-focused expertise to our award-winning, Columbia University-affiliated cancer program — the only Ivy League affiliation of its kind in South Florida.

Dr. Hochwald will usher in a new era of patient-focused care, as we prepare for the building of the Braman Cancer Center on our main campus in Miami Beach, which is expected to be completed in 2025. Dr. Hochwald is focused on expanding oncological services, such as adaptive radiation therapy and robotic surgeries. He will also lead the way in advancing technological resources and developing clinical trials and multidisciplinary clinics for cancer patients.

A graduate of New York University School of Medicine, Dr. Hochwald received postgraduate training in surgical oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and completed an oncology research fellowship at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center’s Surgical Metabolism Laboratory. He also earned an MBA at the University of Buffalo (SUNY) School of Management and an executive degree in managing health care delivery at Harvard Business School Executive Education.

During his time at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center, Dr. Hochwald created significant growth in endoscopy, GI, and endocrine surgery volume; provided leadership and direction for clinical growth; and increased efficiency and quality as the physician leader of all the GI services.

Dr. Hochwald’s work has been published in over 175 medical papers, 38 book chapters and invited manuscripts, and over 19 scholarly reviews. Dr. Hochwald has also led numerous research studies, which aim to help patients with complicated cancers.

We are extremely pleased to welcome Dr. Hochwald to our community, as we continue to expand access to high quality medical care to our patients.

Thank you for entrusting us with your care.
