Dr. Steven Hochwald to usher in new era of nationally recognized cancer care.

MIAMI BEACH, FL — June 1, 2022 Mount Sinai Medical Center welcomes Steven Hochwald, MD, MBA, FACS, as the inaugural director of the new Irma and Norman Braman Cancer Center, set to be completed in 2025. Dr. Hochwald will also serve as chief of surgical oncology and holds titles at Columbia University in New York, as part of Mount Sinai’s ongoing affiliation with the Ivy League institution.

A leading pancreatic and gastrointestinal surgical oncologist, and an avid researcher, Dr. Hochwald was recruited from Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center in New York, an NCI-designated institution. Dr. Hochwald’s extensive research focuses on technical advances in minimally invasive upper gastrointestinal surgeries and on the development of new targets and agents for the treatment of pancreatic and gastroesophageal malignancies.

Dr. Hochwald brings over 30 years of clinical experience and research-focused expertise to Mount Sinai’s award-winning cancer program, which holds the only Ivy League affiliation of its kind in South Florida, backed by Columbia University.

“For over a decade, Mount Sinai’s partnership with Columbia University has provided enhanced expertise and care for the South Florida community,“ said Dr. Anil K. Rustgi, Director of the Columbia University Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center. “The addition of Dr. Hochwald and his research-driven expertise will further elevate the high-quality cancer care Mount Sinai delivers to its patients.”

Dr. Hochwald will usher in a new era of patient-focused care, as the medical center prepares for the building of the Braman Cancer Center on Mount Sinai’s main campus in Miami Beach. Dr. Hochwald is focused on expanding oncological services, such as adaptive radiation therapy and robotic surgeries. He will also lead the way in advancing technological resources and developing clinical trials and multidisciplinary clinics for cancer patients.

“We have the unique opportunity to elevate how cancer care is delivered to our community,” said Dr. Hochwald. “Our expert clinical team, in conjunction with the team at Columbia University, will create a conduit for additional innovation in cancer research, prevention, early detection, therapy, and survivorship, through personalized comprehensive care for our patients.”

A graduate of New York University School of Medicine, Dr. Hochwald received postgraduate training in surgical oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and completed an oncology research fellowship at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center’s Surgical Metabolism Laboratory. He also earned an MBA at the University of Buffalo (SUNY) School of Management and an executive degree in managing health care delivery at Harvard Business School Executive Education.

During his time at Roswell Park Cancer Center, Dr. Hochwald created significant growth in endoscopy, GI, and endocrine surgery volume; provided leadership and direction for clinical growth; and increased efficiency and quality as the physician leader of all the GI services.

Dr. Hochwald’s work has been published in over 200 medical papers, 38 book chapters and invited manuscripts, and over 19 scholarly reviews. Dr. Hochwald has also led numerous research studies, which aim to help patients with complicated cancers.

“We have tremendous depth and breadth of expertise in our cancer program,” said Dr. Kfir Ben-David, Chairman of the Department of Surgery. “The addition of Dr. Steven Hochwald further expands our ability to deliver comprehensive, research-driven care to our patients.”
