On May 11, Working Professors Offer Insight on What’s Needed for a Successful Career in Mental Health Services

May 3, 2022 – With a growing national need for mental health professionals at all levels, Albizu University’s Miami Campus is hosting a discussion panel on what job seekers should know about considering and preparing for a career as a provider who can make a difference.

The free, one-hour virtual event is part of Albizu’s “Ask the Experts” Mental Health Webinar Series and will be livestreamed via Zoom and Facebook Live on Albizu University’s Facebook page (facebook.com/AlbizuMIA) on Wednesday, May 11, 2022 from 1 to 2 p.m. (ET). According to the American Psychological Association and others, a particular challenge in the psychology field has been recruiting a diverse workforce able to address the dynamics of patients from various demographic segments.

Albizu University is known internationally for its culturally sensitive graduate psychology programs and certification training, with special focus on the unique needs of the Hispanic community.  Recently, it was recognized for graduating among the highest number of Latin female Psy.D. degree-holders in the nation.

The National Council for Mental Wellbeing reported that 77 percent of counties in the United States are experiencing a severe shortage of mental health providers. COVID has dramatically increased the need. “This translates into significant hiring opportunities in the mental health and psychology professions,” explained Albizu Professor and Pediatric Mental Health Specialist Dr. Scott Bauer, Psy.D., M.Sc.PP., M.S., L.M.H.C., who will moderate the May 11 forum.

The three-member panel of Albizu professors will delve into various types of career opportunities, how they may have changed since the COVID pandemic and what a typical day is like for a therapist or counselor.

The event panel includes Dr. Jessica Popham, Ph. D., L.M.F.T., who will discuss telehealth opportunities in the mental health profession. Assistant Professor Yamila Lezcano, L.M.H.C. will enlighten attendees on psychology jobs that most people may not know about, such as infant and maternal health, community psychology and applied behavioral analysis. Dr. Edward Heyden, E.d.D. will offer his guidance on careers in forensic psychology.

“Depending on what type of job you’re looking for, you’ll need different levels of education and certification. This event will be a great place to learn more about your options from people who know what it takes to succeed,” Dr. Bauer added.
