An estimated 90 tons of useful medical supplies and equipment enter South Florida’s waste stream each year, filling our local landfills. MedShare, an award-winning national nonprofit organization headquartered in Atlanta with offices in the San Francisco Bay and New York metropolitan areas, seeks to help hospitals and medical supply and equipment manufacturers and change that.

Research conducted for MedShare by Accenture identified Florida as one of the top healthcare markets without a medical surplus recovery organization like MedShare. In response, MedShare hired a Regional Advancement Director in South Florida to introduce the program to the healthcare community, raise donations to seed the program locally, and identify local sources for volunteers, who provide free labor to sort donated supplies.

Founded in 1998, MedShare provides efficient recovery and redistribution of surplus medical supplies and equipment to those most in need. MedShare is a nationally recognized charity and a trusted partner for hundreds of hospitals and manufacturing companies across the country.

MedShare’s medical surplus recycling program gives hospitals an environmentally friendly and unique way to recycle surplus, but usable, medical supplies and equipment that could improve healthcare to the underserved across the globe. Through this program MedShare has recovered and responsibly provided $100 million worth of surplus supplies and equipment to 88 developing countries, including the U.S. To ensure that the surplus meets the specific needs of beneficiaries, MedShare hosts an online portal that gives beneficiaries visibility of the MedShare inventory and the ability to select what they need, putting them in the driver’s seat and ensuring nothing is wasted.

The World Health Organization estimates that more than 10 million children under the age of five die in the developing world due to inadequate medical care. MedShare’s shipments of medical supplies and equipment have brought healing and the promise of better lives to 88 countries and countless patients. MedShare’s beneficiaries also include the U.S. through efforts such as disaster response and local free clinic assistance.

While MedShare does not yet have a physical presence in South Florida, there are a number of ways you can get involved today and help bring MedShare to our community.

Turn Spring Cleaning into a Life-Saving Proposition
Donate Excess Equipment – Do you have equipment that is being replaced but is still useful? You can donate it to MedShare and be sure that its life will be extended to save lives abroad while reducing your carbon footprint.

Use MedShare to Provision Volunteer Medical Teams
Send us donation requests from your staff – Medical professionals often do volunteer work and may ask you to provision teams. MedShare can fulfill these requests, saving you money and help to fulfill your commitment to mission work.

Partner With Us to Support Your International Outreach
Sending aid abroad can be challenging and requires a holistic approach to achieve the best outcomes. Many U.S. hospitals and corporations therefore support twinning projects. Rather than organizing complex aid shipments yourself, you can draw on MedShare’s 14 years of experience and logistical expertise to support your project. For a modest sponsorship relative to the value of the aid provided, you can get a $7 ROI for every $1 invested and our development team can work with you to create and implement a fundraising strategy for your project.
