Larkin Community Hospital is launching a new Cancer Center led by Orlando E. Silva, M.D., JD, Hematologist/Oncologist. Dr. Silva joins Larkin Community Hospital from the University of Miami where he served for 14 years in the clinical role of Attending Physician in Medical Oncology and Hematology and Director of Breast Cancer Education at the Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine with a special focus in fighting breast cancer. Dr. Silva has also been an active faculty member in the Jay Weiss Center for Social Medicine and Health Equity at the University of Miami as well as the Surgical Oncology Fellowship Program at Jackson Memorial Hospital/University of Miami Medical Center.
In 2001, Dr. Silva founded the Emmaus Medical Mission, which has sponsored to date 43 medical missions to South America, Central America, and Africa. In 2002, Dr. Silva founded Silva’s Army, a community of thousands of people focused on patient advocacy, education, and well being as well as fundraising for the American Cancer Society and other cancer fighting opportunities. These accomplishments led to his receiving the Outstanding Hispanic Award at The Americano’s First Annual Hispanic Forum, held in Washington, D.C. in 2010 and the Hispanic Philanthropist Leader Award by Philantroguia in Miami at Northern Trust Bank in 2014.
