The Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine’s recently created Department of Interventional Radiology is one of the first and few of its kind in the nation.
The new department is headed by Dr. Barry T. Katzen, an internationally recognized pioneer in the development of interventional radiology and multidisciplinary models for delivering cardiovascular care. Katzen is the founder and Chief Medical Executive of Miami Cardiac & Vascular Institute, part of Baptist Health South Florida. He performed the first renal angioplasty in the United States, the first TIPS procedure in the US, pioneered catheter directed Thrombolysis, and was a member of the investigative team that led to the approval of the first intravascular stent. As a new clinical field in medicine that combines imaging, medical devices and other technologies relevant to clinical practice, Interventional Radiology is one of the most rapidly-advancing and important fields of clinical care based on numbers of annual manuscripts published, new procedures developed, and unique solutions to complex problems. Interventional Radiology embraces and develops image guided therapeutic and diagnostic procedures woven into a strong clinical practice of medicine.
