With breast cancer the most common form of cancer among women in the United States other than skin cancer, Jackson Health System is continually looking for ways to better treat our patients and encourage women to receive routine care and check-ups. Early detection is key because the earlier cancer is found, the more likely it will be curable.
To improve services for women in South Miami-Dade, a new “one-stop shop” Breast Health Center will be opening later this year at Jackson South Community Hospital. The center aims to make getting necessary medical tests easier, with results available the very same day. The center offers a wide range of services, conveniently all in one location. So if a woman is going for a routine mammogram at the Breast Health Center and needs to see a breast specialist or requires further testing, it can be done right away. The Jackson South Breast Health Center will have state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment such as digital mammography, high-definition 3D ultrasound, high quality densitometry and the most sophisticated suite for minimally invasive stereotactic biopsies. If a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer, she will receive not only the medical treatment needed but emotional support from specially trained counselors. Through affiliations with organizations including A Buddy for You and the Komen Institute, the center has many ways to help patients and their families cope with their illness. Women throughout Miami-Dade County also have access to the Taylor Breast Health Center located downtown at the UM/Jackson Memorial Medical Center. The Taylor center offers the latest diagnostic technologies and tests as well as cryoablation, palpable mass biopsy, needle localization, ultrasound biopsies, stereotactic biopsies and other procedures. A mobile mammography unit is also run by the center, allowing women to receive mammograms conveniently closer to their homes. For those who live in north Miami-Dade, breast screenings are also available at Jackson North Medical Center in North Miami Beach.
