For Mercy Hospital in Miami, 2010 has been a year of noteworthy achievement. Not only is the hospital celebrating its past – Mercy Hospital turns 60 on December 18th – but also its future, outlined by a series of innovative successes geared toward better serving its patients and the ever-growing South Florida community.

In January, Mercy Hospital announced the founding of the CyberKnife Institute, Miami’s first hospital-based CyberKnife® Robotic Radiosurgery Systems. The CyberKnife® Robotic Radiosurgery System is a non-invasive alternative to surgery for treatment of both cancerous and non-cancerous tumors anywhere in the body, including the prostate, lung, brain, spine, liver, pancreas and kidney. This highly specialized Institute has signified new hope for patients with otherwise inoperable or surgically complex tumors.

“We are proud to be able to offer patients more effective treatments through state-of-the-art technology such as CyberKnife ®,” said Manuel P. Anton, III, M.D., Mercy Hospital’s President and CEO. “It’s a major accomplishment to facilitate such services and be at the forefront of their implementation in South Florida.”

In addition to providing patients access to cutting-edge technology, what makes The CyberKnife Institute at Mercy Hospital equally pivotal is its convenience, offering diagnosis and treatment options to patients at one location. At Mercy the superDimension i-Logic System, which broadens the reach of conventional bronchoscopes, provides minimally-invasive access to benign and malignant lesions deep within the lungs. Patients can then be treated by the CyberKnife® Robotic Radiosurgery System at the Institute.

“Another accomplishment this year has been the creation of the Mercy Hospital Medical Group,” added Dr. Anton.
The Mercy Hospital Medical Group, an integrated network of multi-specialty physicians, provides services in the areas of on-Invasive Cardiology, Surgical Oncology and Breast Surgery, Physical and Rehabilitative Medicine and Pain Management, Family Medicine and Sports Medicine as well as Orthopedic Surgery, Endocrinology and Interventional Cardiology.

Most recently, Mercy Hospital was ranked in the top 10% in the nation in Spine Surgery, Stroke Care and Pulmonary Services, and recognized with the Excellence Award in these areas by HealthGrades, the leading independent healthcare ratings organization. Additionally, the following areas of care received Five-Star Ratings: Treatment of Heart Attack & Heart Failure,
Overall Orthopedics, Joint Replacement, Total Knee Replacement, Spine Surgery, Back and Neck Surgery (Spinal Fusion), Stroke Care, Pulmonary Care, Pneumonia, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), Sepsis and Respiratory Failure.
“It is truly an honor for Mercy Hospital to be recognized with these top rankings and ratings,” said Manuel P. Anton, III, M.D., President & CEO of Mercy Hospital. “For Mercy to be acknowledged speaks volumes about the quality care provided by our physicians and staff in all these areas, and further validates our commitment to patients.”

With an emphasis on award-winning service, Mercy Hospital continues to offer quality patient care and the latest technology available with the experience of 60 years of meeting the needs of the Miami-Dade community. With its focus on the future, the feats of 2010 will serve as a catalyst for new efforts by Mercy Hospital in the years ahead.
