Wendell De Matias is proud of the teamwork within his unit, in part because it decreases stress among nurses in what can be difficult circumstances, but more so because it’s something his patients require.
“We care for stroke patients on 4 Central, and they require additional effort,” said De Matias, a nurse for 13 years, including the past 11 with Memorial. “Many are unable to move or speak, which leads to depression, and it’s important we collaborate, understanding the new circumstances patients and families are facing.”
De Matias is a floor leader, preceptor, and/or resource nurse. He is approachable and kind, with a passion for ensuring a positive onboarding experience for new employees. A former “Nurse of the Year” that is consistently nominated for the Daisy Award, he shares his profession with three brothers that were among the first to encourage him to pursue caregiving as a career.
