Jessica Shedaker started her healthcare career as a patient transporter and was considering many different avenues to advance in the field, but nursing wasn’t one of them. That all changed when her first child, Savannah, was born in 2013. “That lit a fire under my butt, and I enrolled in Broward College’s nursing program.”
Shedaker started on an intermediate care unit before transitioning to endoscopy after her twins, Scarlett and Oliver, were born. “I appreciate that you can do so many endoscopic procedures that can help patients avoid invasive surgery,” she said. “We’re able to spot cancers before they become problematic, and also provide advanced treatments for those that have already been diagnosed.”
Now approaching her 15th year in the Memorial Healthcare System (seven as a nurse), she is happy with her career choice and only regrets not making it sooner.
