Facility features 10 operating rooms, 75 private patient rooms, and a research and education center
Orlando, FL – August 24, 2023 – Orlando Health is proud to announce the grand opening of Florida’s first orthopedic hospital. With a longstanding track record in providing excellent patient care and a highly skilled team of physicians and other healthcare professionals, the Orlando Health Jewett Orthopedic Institute aims to raise the bar for orthopedic care throughout the region.

Located at the corner of Columbia St. and Lucerne Terrace in Orlando, the 375,000-square-foot, seven-story institute is the first of its kind in the southeastern U.S. The Orlando Health Jewett Orthopedic Institute Downtown Complex provides every aspect of elective orthopedic care and world class physician training tools under one roof. Patients will be able to access the hospital beginning August 29. The first phase of the project, which was completed in March, included imaging services, an ambulatory surgery center, walk-in orthopedic clinic, and rehabilitation space.
“We designed this facility around patient safety and experience,” said Orlando Health Jewett Orthopedic Institute president Carlos Carrasco. “That’s going to be obvious from the moment a patient walks in the door and throughout their entire time in our care.”
Orlando Health created a new ‘patient ambassador’ position to enhance each patient’s stay in the hospital. The patient ambassador will be assigned to each person as they check-in for surgery and will serve as a dedicated liaison between the patient, loved ones and their care team, addressing any needs as they arise.
Another key feature to comfort patients and their families is an educational showroom in the lobby of the hospital. The room, which is a replica of an operating room, is surrounded by glass and displays the equipment, instruments, robots and implants most commonly used in orthopedic surgeries. Interactive technology walks a patient through their procedure and educates them on the equipment and tools used during surgery.
“As surgeons, we often get questions about what the operating room looks like and the technology we utilize during each procedure,” said Orlando Health Jewett Orthopedic Institute physician president Dr. Michael Jablonski. “We included physicians, nurses and other medical professionals in the planning of this project, which led to these unique touches that will benefit our patients and help ease anxiety before surgery.”
The hospital includes 10 state of the art operating rooms, 75 smart patient rooms, an 11,000 sq. ft. sterile processing center and cafeteria. In the operating rooms, physicians will be able to live stream surgeries to Orlando Health medical residents, as well as collaborate with doctors anywhere in the world. The smart patient rooms will feature a digital whiteboard with access to medical information, video conferencing, as well as personal entertainment streaming services. Patients will be able to use advanced remote technology to optimize their comfort level by controlling environmental factors such as temperature and window shades in the coming months.
The seventh floor of the hospital is dedicated to education and research. It includes the largest Bioskills Lab among the nation’s 54 orthopedic hospitals. In the Bioskills Lab, residents will be able to simulate real-life surgical procedures using anatomical specimens, medical simulators and synthetic models to advance skills and knowledge.
“We already have a competitive and sought after residency program here at the Orlando Health Jewett Orthopedic Institute,” said Orlando Health Jewett Orthopedic Institute academic chairman Dr. George Haidukewych. “The Bioskills lab and additional advanced learning opportunities built into the hospital will allow us to continue to attract the most talented orthopedic surgeons to Central Florida.”
A 116-person stadium-seated auditorium is located on the seventh floor to host lectures. Team members will also be able to utilize a 3D printer to work on complex cases and develop unique devices to advance science and medicine.
The Orlando Health Jewett Orthopedic Institute Downtown Complex will serve more than 250,000 patients each year. The 50 physicians on staff specialize in every area of orthopedics, including joint replacement, hand and upper extremities, foot and ankle, orthopedic trauma, spine, electrodiagnostic medicine, sports medicine, concussions, musculoskeletal radiology, bone health and anesthesia.
The Orlando Health Jewett Orthopedic Institute is the medical provider for UCF Athletics, Orlando City and Orlando Pride Soccer, the Orlando Ballet, Special Olympics Florida, and the Arnold Palmer Invitational.
