Dr. Shanel Bhagwandin joins Jupiter Medical Specialists, improving patient’s access to complex surgical procedures

Jupiter Medical Specialists, a joint venture multispecialty practice with Envision Physician Services and Jupiter Medical Center, welcomes Shanel Bhagwandin, D.O., MPH, to its team, expanding its ability to provide high-quality surgical services. Dr. Bhagwandin is one of few physicians in the region specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of tumors and cancers of the liver, bile ducts, gallbladder, pancreas, stomach and intestinal tract.
“We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Bhagwandin to our team and build upon our commitment to provide the community with high-quality care in a safe, convenient and comfortable setting,” said Lee Fox, M.D., Regional Medical Director for Envision Physician Services. “With his expertise in general surgery and surgical oncology, patients can receive crucial medical care without having to travel long distances.”
Dr. Bhagwandin is the only board-certified complex general surgical oncologist in the Palm Beach, Brevard, Indian River and Martin counties, and one of only seven in Florida. He believes in providing patient-centered, evidence-based care and implementing a multidisciplinary approach to treating cancer. Through his current appointment at the Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City as the Medical Director for Surgical Oncology Network Development, Dr. Bhagwandin also provides his patients access to clinical trials in South Florida. He is skilled in treating patients with advanced peritoneal, colorectal, appendiceal, ovarian and gastric cancers with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy, or HIPEC. The HIPEC procedure delivers highly concentrated, heated chemotherapy into the abdomen during surgery while minimizing its exposure to the rest of the body and reducing its toxic side effects.
“In recent years, we have made significant strides in the diagnosis and treatment of these complex cancers, and I have learned that the referral to a specialist and early treatment intervention is integral to improving patient outcomes,” said Dr. Bhagwandin. “That’s why I am here – to provide the care our patients need as these cancers are on the rise. I look forward to working alongside my colleagues across multiple specialties to make sure patients receive comprehensive care.”
Dr. Bhagwandin serves dual appointments at Jupiter Medical Center and Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City and is a member of several professional organizations. He received his medical degree from Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine and completed his general surgery residency at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Dr. Bhagwandin completed a two-year complex general surgical oncology fellowship at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, specializing in surgery for complex gastrointestinal cancers. He is board certified in general surgery and complex general surgical oncology.
