The Palm Beach Medical Society Celebrates 100 Years of Serving the Community

Palm Beach County Medical Society (PBCMS) installed Marc Hirsh, M.D., as President recently at the Annual Gala at the Kravis Center. Dr. Hirsh leads the society during a very special year — 2019 is the 100-year Centennial of the Palm Beach County Medical Society.

Marc Hirsh, M.D., FACP, of The Hirsh Center in Delray Beach, is a leader in the field of rheumatology. Dr. Hirsh is devoted to raising local awareness about arthritis. He volunteers his time to PBCMS and and finding a cure for the nation’s No. 1 cause of disability — arthritis.

Dr. Hirsh’s vision for PBCMS in 2019 is twofold. He says, “In our centennial year, I believe it is important to promote the well-being of our physicians, and I look forward to offering programming that not only educates, but also celebrates the practice of medicine. For example, Dr. Hirsh continues, “If you look at the traditional mission of a county medical society, it has been to provide things such as networking programs, and to provide educational programming for their physicians. Over the last few years, physician wellness has emerged at the national level as one of the major issues impacting the health care industry as it impacts not just the physicians but also the entire health care delivery team, and ultimately their patients.”

Dr. HIrsh acknowledges that the leadership of the PBCMS has been at the forefront with their response to this national issue and has focused intensely over the last few years on the wellness and personal growth of its physicians, which culminated in an award-winning physician wellness program that promotes the personal and emotional health of the physicians in this county. Furthermore, PBCMS started a physician leadership program to train the physician leaders of tomorrow.

As Dr. Hirsh points out, “The paradox has always been that while the physicians are taking care of their patients, who is taking care of the physicians? The biblical proverb about physicians healing themselves notwithstanding, we recognize that physicians need to start the healing process together. With everything we do, we understand that the main mission of PBCMS is to support the physicians who take care of their patients here in Palm Beach County, and our centennial year is the perfect time to rededicate ourselves to this mission.”

Born and raised in Miami, Dr. Hirsh graduated Phi Beta Kappa with his Bachelor of Science degree and his medical degree from the University of Florida in Gainesville. After an internship at Northwestern University in Chicago, he completed his residency in internal medicine at Jackson Memorial Hospital, University of Miami. He served on the faculty for one year as chief resident before completing his subspecialty training in rheumatology at the University of Miami.

Since 2003, Dr. Hirsh has successfully helped patients in South Florida communities get effective pain relief from rheumatoid arthritis, musculoskeletal conditions, and sports injuries. He uses advanced technologies and regenerative treatments like ultrasound, platelet-rich plasma, and customized braces. Dr. Hirsh and his team focus on providing friendly, personalized, compassionate health care in a state-of-the-art environment.
