Making a strategic shift to support the medical electronics industry with repair solutions, local PC service parts giant Micro Product Distributors "MPD" has launched a new division, Giromag, Inc. "In becoming the largest supplier of consumer PC service parts, MPD’s engineering team developed diagnostic equipment and techniques required to reverse engineer and repair the highly integrated system boards found in consumer PCs and notebook computers. Our repair team has successfully repaired better than 85% of the most sophisticated PC boards that we receive every day and we perform over 5,000 component-level repairs every month" stated Mike Schuler, President of MPD. "We are now applying those skills to the medical electronics industry ".
PC Repair and Parts Supply Giant Moves Towards Medical Electronics
Giromag will initially offer repair of MRI coils, system boards, power supplies and other medical electronics on contract. "It isn’t a coincidence that our engineering team actually designed the original MRI machines currently in use in Cuba" stated Mr. Schuler. "Their engineering skills were essential to helping us develop the best repair team in the PC industry, now we’re turning their attention back towards their roots with the launch of this division".
"In the consumer PC industry, the secondary market began to take over most of the supply contracts for post-warranty support starting in 1994 when Sears transitioned all of their PC parts business to a major secondary market supplier. This move saved them millions of dollars, by buying refurbished parts from a non OEM (original equipment manufacturer). The trend continued and by 2005 every major retailer, extended warranty company and service provider in the consumer PC industry had transitioned to major secondary market suppliers like MPD. We believe these same repair and engineering skills along with our willingness to invest in seed stock for an advanced exchange program, whereby we can offer both depot repair services and (potentially) advanced supply of a good working unit, will provide significant cost reductions and improved turn-around times over current OEM post-warranty solutions".
Giromag will co-locate with MPD which operates from a 70,000 square foot facility in Miami, stocking over a million parts and is staffed with over thirty technicians and engineers.
Hospitals and HMOs can significantly cut costs if they outsource repair of their high-dollar or high-volume medical electronics.
