June 14, 2022 – The American Medical Association (AMA), the nation’s premiere physician organization, today announced the election of Pennsylvania-based hematologist Marilyn Heine, M.D., to its Board of Trustees.
Dr. Heine is a practicing emergency medicine physician with a specialty in hematology and oncology and more than 40 years of experience, having worked in private practice, community-based, hospital, and academic settings. She is currently a clinical assistant professor of medicine at Drexel University College of Medicine in Philadelphia.
“I am honored to be elected by my colleagues to represent their voices on the AMA Board of Trustees,” said Dr. Heine. “During this impactful time, the AMA’s role to shape the future of medicine is evermore essential. In this role, I am committed to advocating for physicians and our patients as we work together to remove obstacles that interfere with care — and improve the health of the nation.”
An AMA member since 1981, Dr. Heine is the immediate past chair of the AMA Council on Legislation and liaison to the AMA Scope of Practice Partnership. As a member of the AMA Private Practice Physicians Congress Governing Council, she helped see to fruition its transition to a Section. In addition, Dr. Heine has served on the AMPAC Board and the AMA Ambassador program inaugural Steering Committee.
Outside of her AMA leadership roles, Dr. Heine served as the president of both the Pennsylvania Medical Society and the Pennsylvania College of Emergency Physicians. Locally, she was appointed by Pennsylvania’s governor to the commonwealth’s Health Care Reform Implementation Advisory Committee, Pennsylvania’s eHealth Collaborative, and the State Board of Medicine.
A strong advocate on topics such as scope of practice, prior authorization, and medical liability reform, Dr. Heine has testified before the U.S. Congress and state legislature, in addition to advising a U.S. President. She also chairs a Congressional Physicians Advisory Board.
Dr. Heine received her undergraduate degree at Brandeis University and completed her medical degree at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. She lives in southeast Pennsylvania with her husband, who is also a physician, and enjoys spending time with family, gardening, and taking walks along the beach.
