Simone Barker, Intern South Florida Hospital & Healthcare Association
Simone Barker is one young woman who will not be spending her summer catching up on the latest best sellers or soaking up the Miami sunshine. Barker is spending four months, from May through August, doing an internship with South Florida Hospital & Healthcare Association.
Barker, a Miami native, has a Bachelor of Health Sciences degree from the University of Florida, and is working towards her Masters of Public Health at Emory University. She will graduate in December and plans to explore fellowship possibilities. Meanwhile, she is assisting Linda Quick, president of SFHHA, attending committee meetings and working on organizational projects, including a malpractice liability and litigation project. Under the supervision of her proctor, Jeremy Johnson, SFHHA vice-president, Barker is also reviewing and upgrading the organizations brochures and other printed materials.
“Simone is dedicated to finding the best information,” says Quick. “She is assuring that the material is not only accurate, for the providers, but also appealing to the consumer. She is a hard worker and very helpful to us.”
Barker has enrolled in the American Hospital Association Institute for Diversity, which has a summer internship program offering peer support, conference calls, a newsletter and other resources. She will attend the Institutes upcoming 3-day conference on contemporary health issues.
Barker plans to use this summers internship experience to launch a career in health care administration or consulting.
