As a specialty primarily focused on improving quality of life for patients, pediatric palliative care often involves acute and chronic pain management. Dr. Amisha Desai, a fellowship-trained physician, prefers non-pharmacologic interventions for pain whenever possible.
“Pain is best managed by addressing not only physical pain but also its psychological and social aspects as well,” said Dr. Desai. “It is a multi-modal, interdisciplinary approach that I’ve found delivers the best outcomes.”
Acupuncture is one of the weapons in the doctor’s arsenal. Many studies have demonstrated its success treating several conditions, including chronic pain, with minimal, if any, side effects. The treatment involves inserting tiny, hair-thin needles into the skin at strategic points to improve energy flow throughout the body. Dr. Desai completed an acupuncture training course in 2024 and now offers the treatment at her outpatient office in Miramar. She is hoping to bring this treatment to Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital in Hollywood soon.
