The word “lifer” to describe a person’s longtime connection to an organization is, in the case of Elizabeth Morris and Memorial Healthcare System, literally true.
“I was born at Memorial Regional Hospital and worked there in dietary my first job as a teenager,” said Morris, currently the director of rehabilitation services at Memorial Hospital Pembroke. “Worked my way through college in the blood bank and laboratory before transitioning to rehabilitation as a physical therapist. My children were born here and it’s where my family is cared for when they’re sick. Needless to say, I have a vested interest in Memorial’s mission.”
As Morris nears retirement after a 30-year professional career, she is most proud of watching those she has hired and/or mentored become successful leaders. Her advice to those and others who’ll follow in her footsteps? Set expectations and then hold yourself and your team accountable to exceed those expectations.
