This is a Publisher’s Note about nothing … that is nothing traumatic or depressing. But after last month, it’s a welcome relief to have nothing dreadful to report. Instead, I’ll regale you with a few tidbits from our July. I know these are supposed to be the “lazy, hazy days of summer,” but someone forgot to tell our kids. They’re all keeping us very busy and very broke, but definitely beaming!

First, we got the opportunity (next time Josh offers me an “opportunity,” Carol says to run and hide) to spend four days babysitting our grandchildren Kenzie and Karter. But despite widespread misgivings about our abilities and as much as I’d like to report (for comedic purposes) a litany of trials and tribulations, it went pretty smoothly. No bumps, no bruises, no lost toys and, most importantly, no lost grandkids. In fact, we couldn’t have asked for two better-behaved kids.

It’s hard to complain about an 18-month-old who walks up the stairs carrying his own blanket the minute you utter the word “bedtime.” And not to be outdone – there’s three-year-old Kenzie who can locate crucial take-out menus for a starving Papa Charles. Of course, some might think this spirit of cooperation was a direct result of repeated visits to Toys R Us or Chuck E. Cheese – but then I’m a grandfather so I have a selective memory.

And how did we complete our July – getting ready for grandchild number 3! Yes, there’s going to be a new addition to the Felix clan later this Fall, courtesy of Drew and Carly. So you know what that means – endless visits to baby stores, unending discussions about the perfect stroller and car seat, not to mention the compulsory day assembling the crib, etc. And Carol, who usually holds a dollar until it squeaks, has definitely caught the baby bug – can you say designer duds for the new little girl? I’m convinced Carly will be able to change the baby 10 times a day for the first year and never venture near a washing machine, there’s so much hanging in her closet already. In any case, Felix grandbaby #3, we can’t wait to meet you!

As I write these final few lines, I am awaiting the arrival of my in-laws, who’ve decided to drive down from Atlanta, despite not having driven anywhere farther than the grocery store in several years. They stopped in Ocala last night, and seemed to be having a very fine adventure, enjoying the sights, and in general doing what they’ve loved to do for many years when they were younger. We’re anxious to see them here safe and sound, and I hope that they can have many more “adventures” before things get too difficult. What can I say? Life is good.
