South Miami Hospital Vice President and Chief Nursing Officer Kathy Sparger, R.N., was recently inducted into Miami Dade Colleges Hall of Fame for her contributions to the community in the field of nursing.
Spargers nursing career began 34 years ago when she earned her associate of science degree from Miami-Dade Community College, now known as Miami Dade College. Since then, she has consistently and successfully expanded her career through experience and education. She earned a bachelor of science degree in nursing from Barry University in 1988 and, three years later, earned a master of science degree in nursing administration from Barry. Her education, backed by her determination to lead, helped her advance her career from a critical care nurse to a senior hospital administrator, overseeing patient care as well as contributing to the operational and strategic goals of the hospital.
Her leadership extends to the community as well. She is a member of the Miami Pinecrest Dadeland Rotary and contributes to the United Way. She is active with the South Florida Organization of Nurse Executives and has previously served on the Florida Nursing Associations Board of Directors. She also has been an adjunct professor at Barry University for the past 12 years. In 2003, she was recognized by the Florida Nursing Association for her nursing leadership and joined Sigma Theta Tau International, a national nursing honor society.
