October 2 2020 – Two abstract submissions from nurse teams at St. Lucie Medical Center have been chosen by the scientific review committee as a top 10 finalist in HCA Healthcare’s Enhanced Surgical Recovery (ESR) Expo. One winning submission by Orthopedics Director Tami Speed looked at ways to elevate the quality of care on the Orthopedic & Spine unit by decreasing pain medication usage, and was titled My Pain? Your Pain?: Goal Directed Pain Management. The other submission by Orthopedic Navigator Tara Bare looked at how implementation of the orthopedic ESR program has been able to decrease opioid-use and post-operation complications and was titled Changing the Old for New—Integration of Enhanced Surgical Recovery (ESR) curriculum into an already successful joint replacement program.

ESR is a multi-pronged program that includes interventions before, during and after surgery that decrease complications, hospital length of stay, postoperative pain and readmissions. St. Lucie will receive an award plaque for the accomplishment and both abstracts will appear in a compilation book.
