South Florida’s oldest faith based hospital, St. Mary’s Medical Center, celebrated its 75th anniversary in April.
Founded in 1938 by the Franciscan Sisters of Allegany, NY, St. Mary’s was originally a 50-bed facility. Seventy-five years later, St. Mary’s Medical Center is now an award winning 464-bed acute care hospital and tertiary care center for the region with more than 1,800 employees, 530 physicians and over 200 volunteers. St. Mary’s is also home to the Palm Beach Children’s Hospital, the only dedicated pediatric hospital between Orlando and Ft. Lauderdale.
St. Mary’s has grown in size and scope to meet the healthcare demands of our ever growing community. The combination of advanced medical technologies, highly trained personnel and compassionate commitment has led to many “firsts” and “onlys” in Palm Beach County including the first Trauma Center, first Neonatal Intensive Care Center, the only member of the prestigious Children’s Oncology Group, and in 2011, performed the first Pediatric Open Heart surgery. St. Mary’s features many advanced services including our comprehensive stroke and neuroscience center and the Paley Limb Reconstruction and Limb Lengthening Institute and VIP birth suites.
