These awards recognize the hospitals commitment to ensuring stroke and heart patients receive the most appropriate treatment according to nationally recognized, research-based guidelines based on the latest scientific evidence.

The awards for each hospital are:

Good Samaritan Medical Center: Stroke Gold Plus
Palm Beach Gardens Medical Center: Gold Plus Target Stroke Elite
St. Mary’s Medical Center: Gold Plus Target Stroke Elite Plus, Target Stroke Advance Therapy
West Boca Medical Center: Heart Failure Gold Plus, Stroke Gold Plus

These recognitions come at a time when many people might be delaying care or treatment for new or chronic illnesses, but the Palm Beach Health Network has the appropriate supplies, and has implemented protocols that are designed to keep patients safe.  The hospitals earned these awards by meeting specific quality achievement measures for the diagnosis and treatment of stroke and heart patients at a set level for a designated period. These measures include evaluation of the proper use of medications along with other stroke and heart treatments aligned with the most up-to-date, evidence-based guidelines with the goal of speeding recovery and reducing death and disability for patients. Before discharge, patients should also receive education on managing their health, and get a follow-up visit scheduled, as well as other care transition interventions.

“The Palm Beach Health Network is dedicated to improving the quality of safe care for our stroke & heart patients by implementing the American Heart Association’s Get with the Guidelines-Stroke and Heart initiative,” said Maggie Gill, chief executive officer of the Palm Beach Health Network.   “It is important not to ignore the symptoms of a stroke or heart attack, and to seek emergency care at a hospital as soon as possible. The faster you come to the hospital for treatment the better your chances of survival.”

According to the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association, stroke is the No. 5 cause of death and a leading cause of adult disability in the United States. On average, someone in the U.S. suffers a stroke every 40 seconds and nearly 795,000 people suffer a new or recurrent stroke each year.
