December 17 2021 – Twenty-three drivers from South Florida and around the country took part in the 6th annual Race to Beat Cancer at Homestead Motor Speedway on December 5 – 7, 2021. The school for beginning and advanced drivers is a way to unite the racing community in the fight against cancer. The event raised more than $100,000 for cancer research, oncology nursing programs, and early detection/prevention initiatives. It was generously sponsored by AutoNation (Presenting Platinum level), Firestone, SiriusXM, and Amazon Hose & Rubber.

“I could not think of a better way to raise money for such an amazing cause with the bonus of being able to drive these open wheel race cars with Indy Car Pro Drivers,” said Tim Hocklander, a participant from Fort Lauderdale, FL. “It is an amazing and unique experience.”

The event kicked off Sunday, December 5th, with a welcome dinner at Playa Largo Resort in Key Largo, Florida where Ryan Hunter-Reay and fellow Indy Car driver James Hinchliffe met all the participants and their guests. On Monday morning, it was time to race. Racing for Cancer partners with Lucas Oil School of Racing to put on an intense program designed for both beginning and advanced drivers. They spend two days on track with the instructors as well as IndyCar pros who are there to coach and race with participants and spend time with them off the track as well. After the first day on track, a second dinner was hosted at the resort on the beach with a fun Q&A session with the IndyCar drivers.

“Each year, our event gets bigger and better. We welcome back drivers from previous years and meet new drivers who want to help our cause and learn to race,” said Ryan Hunter-Reay. “James and I enjoy every minute of this event, including coaching the drivers and then racing with them on track. We have a blast and for all the right reasons!”

This is the first time the event has been hosted at Homestead Miami Raceway with the event resort in Key Largo.
