From the moment patients enter the lobby of the Griffin Surgical Tower, they are greeted with thoughtful design features aimed at reducing the stress and anxiety often associated with surgeries. Twinkling lights on the ceiling guide young patients on their journey through the tower, from pre-surgical consultations to post-operative recovery, creating a calming and whimsical experience.
Additionally, the tower’s use of natural light and soothing color palettes helps foster a serene and peaceful environment, contributing to the emotional well-being of both patients and their families.
Cutting-Edge Surgical Suites for Advanced Pediatric Care
One of the most notable aspects of the new tower is its innovative surgical suites, which have been significantly expanded in both size and capability. The operating rooms are now nearly three times the size of the hospital’s previous surgical suites, each measuring 800 square feet. These larger spaces not only accommodate advanced medical technologies, but also improve workflow, allowing surgeons and medical staff to move more freely and collaborate more effectively.
The operating rooms are equipped with color-changing lights, which can be adjusted to create an optimal environment for various types of procedures. Whether a surgery requires bright lighting or a more calming, dimmed atmosphere, the flexibility of these lights enhances the precision of surgical care. Additionally, UV lighting is incorporated into the rooms to help sterilize the space quickly and efficiently after procedures, further supporting the hospital’s high standards of patient safety.
A standout feature within the Kenneth C. Griffin Surgical Tower is the sterile processing department, which boasts one of the largest and most advanced systems in the country. Equipped with an instrument washer that cuts wash cycles in half, the department ensures surgical tools are always clean, sterile, and ready for use. The Hanel system, used for organizing and storing surgical instruments, also supports Nicklaus Children’s position as a Level 1 trauma center, ensuring that surgical teams can access critical tools quickly and easily in any situation.

The surgical suites within the Griffin Tower are a testament to the evolution of pediatric surgery over the last 40 years, incorporating technologies that set a new standard in the field. Each of the 12 operating rooms is fully integrated with monitors that allow clinicians to access critical information in real-time without leaving the sterile environment. These multifunctional monitors also serve as educational tools, enabling residents, fellows, and students to observe surgeries remotely, a key feature of Nicklaus Children’s status as a leading teaching hospital in the Southeast.
Advanced robotics, such as the Medtronic O-arm® system for neurosurgery and the DaVinci® surgical system, are now part of the surgical landscape at Nicklaus Children’s, providing surgeons with enhanced precision and control. The spacious design of the operating rooms ensures that these advanced technologies can be seamlessly integrated into current procedures, while also allowing for future innovations to be easily accommodated.
Enhancing the Patient and Family Experience
In line with Nicklaus Children’s mission, the Griffin Surgical Tower has been designed to prioritize patient and family comfort at every stage of the surgical process. Larger in-patient rooms provide families with the space they need to stay close to their child throughout their hospital stay, while induction rooms allow parents to be present during anesthesia, offering comfort and reassurance to both the patient and family members.
The new tower also incorporates several unique features designed to reduce patient anxiety. Virtual reality tools are available to distract and entertain young patients, while immersive technology transforms the surgical experience into something more akin to a theater, with calming videos that help ease children into the procedure. Additionally, the tower’s paperless registration process and up-to-the-minute texting platform for surgical updates streamline communication and reduce the stress of waiting for information.
