Broward General Medical Center, the first hospital in Broward County, opened in January 1938 in the Granada Hotel Building on Southeast First Avenue. The facility contained 45-beds, one operating room, one delivery room and one x-ray machine. The building did not have the comfort of air-conditioning or a heating system.

The first wing of the hospital was built in 1942, adding 59 new beds. Another 32 beds were added to the bed count in 1948. Since 1951, various renovation and construction projects have been undertaken to meet the growing and changing demands for healthcare in our community. Highlights include:

1965 – Addition of North Tower and Emergency Department
1967 – Addition of South Tower and Labor and Delivery Unit
1969 – Laboratory and Radiology Expansion
1975 – Addition of Medical Office Building
1982 – Addition of NICU
1994 – Expansion of Labor and Delivery Unit
2002 – Broward General broke ground on a $163 million campus expansion and renovation project

In addition to 480,000 square feet of new construction, extensive upgrades transform the current facility including private rooms. The beautiful new environment provides for improved patient flow and greater efficiencies for staff and physicians.

Just steps away from the hospital’s main entrance, a seven-story parking garage provides covered parking for patients, visitors, physicians and staff. Separate entrances offer direct access to the Heart Center of Excellence, the Comprehensive Cancer Center and the Chris Evert Children’s Hospital. The new hospital structure also provides convenient access to pre-admission testing, outpatient surgery, radiology and other diagnostic services.

Across the street from the main campus, a new 180,000 square foot medical office building will be constructed. A walkway over Andrews Avenue will offer safe access between the parking garage, the hospital facility and the medical office building.

In 2004, the first Ronald McDonald House in Broward County opened on the Broward General campus, providing a home away from home for families of children hospitalized at the Chris Evert Children’s Hospital. A Liver Transplant House is also planned to open.
