Jackson Health System is proud to announce that Andreas G. Tzakis, M.D., Ph.D., was honored with an honorary doctorate by the University of Gothenburg in Sweden. Dr. Tzakis, professor of surgery and director of the Liver/Gastrointestinal Transplant Team at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Medical Center Miami Transplant Institute, was one of five recipients of a prestigious honorary doctorate conferred by the university.Dr. Tzakis is one of the world’s most innovative transplant surgeons. Dr. Tzakis described the 1980s as the golden age of opportunity for surgeons, when advances were rapid and frequent. He helped test new and much more effective immunosuppressants for transplant patients, and he was on the team that carried out the first transplant of insulin-producing cells from the pancreas. He is also involved in research into womb transplantation at the Sahlgrenska Academy, the faculty of health sciences at the University of Gothenburg.
