May 6 Event at Jungle Island to Honor South Florida Champions for the Elderly and Disabled

United HomeCare Services (UHCS) announced the award recipients and major sponsors confirmed as of March 24 for the 16th Annual Claude Pepper Memorial Awards event on May 6th at Jungle Island in Miami.

The event honors individuals and corporations which, like the Honorable Claude Pepper, have made a significant contribution to meeting the needs of the elderly and/or the disabled in Miami-Dade County. Over the years the event has become a signature gathering of some of South Florida’s most dedicated, inspirational individuals and organizations.

We’re proud to do our part in carrying on Claude Pepper’s legacy by hosting the Claude Pepper Memorial Awards for the last sixteen years, and this year’s honorees and event sponsors have clearly done their part to honor Mr. Pepper’s legacy as well,” said José R. Fox, President and Chief Executive Officer of UHCS.” Confirmed award recipients for 2010 are:

  • Corporate Service – Healthcare: Philip Frost, M.D., Chairman and CEO OPKO Health
  • Advocacy: Edwin Olsen, M.D., Miami Area Geriatric Education Center
  • Public Awareness/Media: John Dorschner, Reporter, Miami Herald
  • Thelma Gibson Community Service: Kevin Packman, Partner, Holland & Knight
  • Public Service: Senator Joe Negron, R-Florida
  • Community Builder/Contributor: Colonel Brodes H. Hartley, Jr., President & CEO, Community Health of South Florida, Inc.

Fox noted that additional award recipients may be announced before the May 6 event.

Serving as Master of Ceremonies for the event will be Sandra Peebles, a reporter for Noticias Univision -Channel 23, host of Galavision’s national television program “Your Health,” and a five-time Emmy Award-winning broadcast news journalist.

Major sponsors for the 2010 event were also announced. They are:

Throughout his 60-year career of public service at the local, state and national level, Claude Pepper fought for the rights and the welfare of the elderly and the poor. He understood that health care in the home and community was indispensible to the well-being of older Americans and worked tirelessly towards improvements in these and other services until his death in 1989. Through the Claude Pepper Memorial Awards, United HomeCare Services pays tribute to one of Florida’s finest citizens and public servants by celebrating the achievements of exceptional individuals among us who exemplify the spirit and ideals of the award’s namesake.
