The Martin Memorial Auxiliary is an organization with a rich heritage of volunteer support. Established in 1942, not long after Martin County Hospital opened in 1939, the Auxiliary supports all of Martin Memorial Health Systems’ facilities on the Treasure Coast.

Today’s Auxiliary has 900 volunteers donating almost 200,000 volunteer hours annually. That’s more than $4 million dollars worth of service contributed to Martin Memorial Health Systems last year alone.

The Auxiliary has long played a role in helping Martin Memorial provide care for the community in countless ways.
That includes financial support through contributions that have benefited programs, services and personnel. The Auxiliary completed a $1 million pledge for the Frances Langford Heart Center in 2009 and contributed to the construction of the Robert and Carol Weissman Cancer Center in 1999.

And since 1978, Martin Memorial and the Auxiliary have partnered to award approximately $1.1 million in scholarships to 824 residents of Martin and St. Lucie counties.

Patient satisfaction is a major goal for health care facilities. Research shows hospital volunteers play a large role in achieving that patient satisfaction and we are fortunate to have Auxiliary members who contribute greatly in that regard.

Who are our volunteers and why do they offer their services free of charge? Many of them say it is personally rewarding and gratifying knowing that their smile, kind act, conversation or caring ways make such an impact on patients and visitors. It also gives them a great sense of worth and pride, giving back to their community in such a meaningful way.

Our volunteers are high school students exploring future career opportunities, interns preparing to enter the workforce, stay-at-home parents wanting some adult interaction, working individuals looking to occupy their free time and retirees who are just not ready to stop working. And it is their genuine desire to help others that make our volunteers such valuable members of our health care family.
