Growing up in New York City, Rafael Guzman, LCSW, developed an early appreciation for the resilience people show in the face of adversity. Witnessing the effects of poverty, homelessness, addiction and trauma inspired a career in social work – one he says ultimately chose him.
During his 17 years with Memorial Healthcare System, Guzman has supported patients across behavioral health, including on the Medication Assisted Treatment Team during the opioid crisis and COVID-19 pandemic. Today, as Social Work Supervisor for the Pediatric Emergency Department at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, he helps children and families navigate some of life’s most difficult moments.
Guzman believes every patient deserves a safe space to share their story and know they are not facing it alone. By partnering with families and the interdisciplinary care team, he strives to build a foundation for immediate safety and long-term healing. “The skills can be taught, but the heart for this work comes from within,” Guzman said.
