Sept. 30, 2026 – Delray Medical Center is the only hospital south of Orlando to offer THUNDERBOLT® (Penumbra, Inc.), the first computer assisted vacuum thrombectomy (CAVT™) technology that is designed specifically to address acute ischemic stroke and help physicians to more fully capture and remove blood clot quickly and efficiently in the brain.

Stroke is the second leading cause of death globally. In the U.S., more than 795,000 people have a stroke every year. About 87% of all strokes are ischemic strokes, in which blood flow to the brain is blocked. Recently cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), THUNDERBOLT introduces an advanced technology, modulated aspiration, which is designed to detect, fatigue and ingest blood clot in the brain, restoring critical blood flow. This advanced aspiration technology combined with Penumbra’s innovative RED® Reperfusion Catheters, which is designed for better navigation in the brain’s complex anatomy and to quickly remove the blood clot causing the stroke.
