Titles Teach Kids to Recognize, Respect and Understand Their Feelings, and Those of Others

October 13, 2026 – Caren Opperman Sollod, a former elementary school teacher and current advocate for foster and at-risk youth, has written a series of books to help younger children understand emotions they may be experiencing. The ‘It’s Okay to Be’ series, which currently features three titles, also teaches kids how feelings, even negative ones, can be channeled productively into interactions with others.

Sollod, a Coral Springs resident, often reads in schools and her stories validate feelings children under seven may have but not completely understand. Her “toolbox” contains easily implemented strategies kids can use to empower themselves in stressful situations. Above all, she wants young readers to understand their experiences are normal and that feelings can be proactively addressed.

Sollod used her own grief as the inspiration for The Day that Oliver Went Away, a sweet story that helps children understand and process sadness. Whether the loss is of a beloved pet, as it was for the author, a friend that’s moved away or a toy that’s gone missing, the message is that it’s okay to be sad when something unexpected or sad happens.

The second book in the series, Boo Gets Scared Too, uses a lovable bear to help kids understand and cope with everyday situations that can cause fear. Boo validates those feelings and provides inside and outside tools to help promote self-esteem, compassion and confidence.

It’s Nice to be Nice is the most recent of Sollod’s published works. It demonstrates what kindness looks like through characters relatable to her readers. They share real-life experiences and the truth that while it isn’t always easy to be kind, it’s something everyone can learn to be.

“It’s my sincere desire to make a difference and empower children through reading,” said Sollod, the founder of Solid Success Publications. “As a former teacher that’s still active in classrooms, I’ve seen firsthand how a compelling story can teach life lessons kids need now more than ever.”
