The Diabetes Research Institute Foundation was founded in 1971 by a small group of parents of children with diabetes who were committed to finding a cure for this devastating disease. Driven by hope and fueled by the need to end their children’s suffering, they banded together to support a promising research program at the University of Miami solely aimed at curing those living with diabetes.

Throughout its history, the Diabetes Research Institute Foundation has made research progress at the Diabetes Research Institute (DRI) possible. Supported by private philanthropy, the Foundation has enabled DRI scientists to think freely, pursue innovative ideas and turn new discoveries into real breakthroughs for patients.

Since its inception, the Foundation has raised millions in support of the Institute’s research programs. While the DRI has enjoyed great success in competing for peer-reviewed grants, these funds alone do not cover the entire cost of all research projects, a critical gap that is filled by the Foundation.

On an annual basis, the Foundation hosts numerous informational workshops for people with diabetes and their families focusing on the latest advances toward a cure. Additionally, Institute and Foundation faculty and staff participate in a variety of print and broadcast public service programs locally, nationally, and internationally, which are designed to educate the community on current research progress and the newest diabetes management techniques.

A 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation, the Foundation raises funds through individual and corporate donations, memberships, foundation grants, special events, and planned giving, which allows donors to leave a personal legacy by providing a gift in the form of a will, trust or other deferred giving vehicle.

The DRI Foundation has thousands of members both in the United States and around the world, and has successfully expanded into various locations, including the opening of regional development offices in New York, Long Island, Washington, D.C., and Los Angeles.
