On April 1st 2003, H.D., a 62 year old man, was hit by a truck traveling at 65 mph, resulting in a crushed pelvis, multiple fractures of left femur, multiple ankle fractures, 4 broken ribs, 3 fractured lumbar vertebra and a deep scalp laceration. H.D. was airlifted to a nearby trauma center and was admitted to a local hospital. He was comatose for 2 weeks, relying on a ventilator and underwent major orthopedic surgery. As a result of the orthopedic injures, he was bedridden, unable to walk for a total of 4 months, which resulted in a stage 4 ulcer on his right hip.
From the acute care hospital, he was transferred to a rehabilitation facility. He stayed there for 6 weeks where his condition deteriorated, to the point that a higher level of care was needed. According to H.D., there was no real wound care treatment or therapy provided. There was no mention of debridement, or any other strategic plan to get the wound healed or get him back on his feet.
In August, he was transferred to Kindred Hospital of Ft Lauderdale for woundcare treatment and aggressive rehabilitation. He was placed on an air fluidized bed, received surgical debridement by plastic surgeon, and negative pressure wound therapy consistently for the length of his stay. He also received aggressive Physical and occupational therapy twice daily.
In November, H.D. was discharged from Kindred ambulating with a cane and with 90% wound healing. Currently, he trains with a world reknown weight lifting champion at World Gym in Port Saint Lucie, Florida and is able to leg press over 700 pounds. H.D. is a true success story and he thanks everyone for the great care he received at Fort Lauderdale, Kindred Hospital of South Florida.
