Memorial Healthcare System – Broward County’s provider of outstanding healthcare since 1953 – had a great beginning for its next decade of service to the South Florida community. Highlights of 2014 include:

Adult Heart Transplant Comes to Broward
Memorial Cardiac and Vascular Institute made history with Broward’s first adult heart transplant in September. Marina, a 51-year-old patient suffering from advanced end-stage heart failure, underwent six hours of surgery at Memorial Regional Hospital. After three weeks in the hospital, Marina was discharged home. Today, she is adjusting very well to her new heart and is looking forward to performing the simple tasks we all take for granted, like driving. Nine days after Marina’s surgery, Memorial’s second adult patient underwent his heart transplant and is successfully recovering today.

Memorial’s adult heart transplants have followed on the heels of the pediatric cardiac transplant program at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, where 17 transplant surgeries have been performed at the Heart Institute since 2010.

Memorial’s heart transplant programs are testimony to its unwavering commitment to providing the full spectrum of cardiac care for patients of all ages.

The Heart Institute at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Welcomes Dr. Edward Bove
Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital’s Heart Institute welcomed internationally renowned pediatric cardiac and thoracic surgeon Edward L. Bove, MD, cardiac surgeon at C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital and chair of the Department of Cardiac Surgery at University of Michigan Health System. Dr. Bove works collaboratively with the Heart Institute’s team of cardiac specialists while continuing his roles with C.S. Mott and the University of Michigan Health System.

Dr. Bove has served as professor of surgery at leading educational institutions around the country, and has consulted for numerous healthcare providers nationwide and around the world.

Memorial Rehabilitation Institute Expands to Better Serve Patients and Families

Memorial Rehabilitation Institute spent 2014 getting an exciting facelift, undergoing $6 million in renovations and expansions at Memorial Regional Hospital South, Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, Memorial Hospital West and Memorial Hospital Miramar.

Space dedicated to inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation at all four locations was expanded and redesigned, with new equipment to make additional services available for the thousands of rehabilitation patients the institute serves every year.

Memorial Regional Hospital South’s 69-bed adult inpatient unit added 16 new beds for traumatic brain injury patients. New programs and equipment in the outpatient rehabilitation departments at Memorial Regional Hospital South and Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital focused on the needs of adult and pediatric stroke, brain injury, oncology, orthopedic and sports medicine patients. At Memorial Hospital West, approximately 10,000 square feet of the Fitness and Rehabilitation Center was remodeled to provide separate, secure environments for adult and pediatric patients.

Memorial Hospital Miramar completed a new pediatric neurological suite, increasing treatment space to 6,600 square feet for adult, adolescent and pediatric patients. The hospital also added a new pediatric suite and new equipment in its [U18] Sports Medicine unit.
