October 30, 2019 – Denver, CO—The American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) today announced the election of new officers to its Board of Directors during ACEP19, the nation’s largest annual gathering of emergency physicians. The Board is responsible for leadership, policymaking and management for the association which provides a united voice for 40,000 individual emergency physicians who practice and are employed in a variety of work settings. The Board is elected by the ACEP Council and can serve up to two 3-year terms.

Newly-Elected Board Officers
Chair of the Board, Jon Mark Hirshon, MD, PhD, MPH, FACEP, is a professor in the Departments of Emergency Medicine and in the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. He is also the attending physician at the University of Maryland Medical Center and Baltimore VA Medical Center. He was first elected to the Board in 2014. Dr. Hirshon earned his medical degree at the University of Southern California and completed his residency in emergency medicine at Johns Hopkins Hospital University in Baltimore, Md.
President, William Jaquis, MD, FACEP, is an attending physician at Aventura Medical Center in Florida. He has served on the ACEP Board in 2012 and 2015, including a term as vice president. He also served as the president of the Maryland ACEP chapter. Dr. Jaquis is the senior vice president of Envision Health East Florida Division. Dr. Jaquis earned his medical degree at the Medical College of Ohio and completed his residency at Case Western-Mt. Sinai Medical Center in Cleveland.
President-Elect, Mark S. Rosenberg, DO, MBA, FACEP is chair of emergency medicine at St. Joseph’s Health in Patterson, New Jersey. He also serves as the hospital’s chief innovation officer and led the development of the nation’s first Alternative to Opioids program. Dr. Rosenberg was first elected to the ACEP Board in 2015. He also serves on the board of directors of the Emergency Medicine Foundation and on the national Pain Management Task Force of the U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services. Dr. Rosenberg earned his medical degree from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and is certified by the American Osteopathic Board of Emergency Medicine (AOBEM) and the American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM) in emergency medicine and hospice and palliative care.
Vice President, Gillian Schmitz, MD, FACEP, is an associate professor at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. She is also the vice chair of education at the Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, TX. Within ACEP, Dr. Schmitz is a former chair of the Academic Affairs Committee, subcommittee chair for the Medical Legal Committee, chair for the Young Physicians Section, and former Board member for the Emergency Medicine Resident’s Association (EMRA). She has been active in the Texas ACEP chapter and is a past-president of the Government Services chapter. Dr. Schmitz has a medical degree from Loyola Stritch School of Medicine in Chicago and completed her residency at the University of North Carolina.
Secretary-Treasurer, Christopher S. Kang, MD, FACEP, FAWM, is an emergency physician at Madigan Army Medical Center in Tacoma, Wash., and for Olympia Emergency Physicians, LLC, at Providence St. Peter Hospital. He also serves on the faculty of the hospital’s emergency medicine residency program. Dr. Kang was first elected to the ACEP Board in 2015. Previously, he served as president of ACEP’s Washington State chapter. In addition, Dr. Kang served on ACEP’s Chapter Relations Committee and previously chaired the organization’s Disaster Preparedness and Response Committee. He earned his medical degree and completed his residency in emergency medicine at Northwestern University in Chicago.
Immediate Past-President, Vidor Friedman, MD, FACEP, is the vice president for governmental affairs for Florida Emergency Physicians (FEP of TeamHealth). He was voted to ACEP’s Board in 2012 and 2015. Dr. Friedman was a trustee of the Emergency Medicine Foundation (2011-17) and served as chair in 2015. He served as chair of ACEP’s Federal Governmental Affairs Committee and chapter president of the Florida College of Emergency Physicians. Dr. Friedman earned his medical degree at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine and completed his emergency medicine residency at Michigan State University.
Newly-Elected Board Members
Jeffrey M. Goodloe, MD, FACEP, is Professor of Emergency Medicine, EMS Section Chief, and Director of the Oklahoma Center for Prehospital and Disaster Medicine in the Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of Oklahoma School of Community Medicine. He works clinically at Hillcrest Medical Center Emergency Center in Tulsa, OK. Dr. Goodloe serves as Chief Medical Officer for the EMS System for Metropolitan Oklahoma City and Tulsa. He is also Medical Director and a tactical emergency physician for the Oklahoma Highway Patrol. Dr. Goodloe received his medical degree from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. His emergency medicine residency was completed at Methodist Hospital of Indiana/Indiana University School of Medicine. He subsequently served as the inaugural EMS fellow at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas.
Gabor Kelen, MD, FACEP, is the current chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. Dr. Kelen is also director of the Johns Hopkins Office of Critical Event Preparedness and Response. He also holds teaching positions in anesthesiology in critical care and health policy and management. He has extensive experience with public health and infectious disease with a focus on AIDS. He has been involved with the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine and National Academies of Science. Dr. Kelen received his medical degree and completed his residency with the University of Toronto and completed an emergency medicine residency with Johns Hopkins Hospital.
Ryan Stanton, MD, FACEP, is an emergency physician with Central Emergency Physicians in Kentucky. Dr. Stanton is the EMS Medical Director for Lexington-Fayette Urban County as well as the Medical Director for Bluegrass Airport, Medical Director for AirMed International in Kentucky and Florida, and member of the AMR/NASCAR safety team. Dr. Stanton is a medical correspondent for WKYT in Kentucky and creator/host of the ACEP Frontline podcast. He is a past-president of the Kentucky ACEP chapter. Dr. Stanton has a medical degree from James H. Quillen College of Medicine and completed his residency in emergency medicine at the University of Kentucky.
Current Board Members
Stephen Anderson, MD, FACEP, is an emergency physician at MultiCare Auburn Medical Center in Auburn, Wash. Over a 30-year career he has held positions there that include chairman of emergency services, stroke care, trauma care, education, and chief-of-staff. He has served as president of the Washington state chapter of ACEP and was elected to the national Board of Directors in 2014, serving most recently as immediate past chair of the board. Dr. Anderson received his medical degree from the University of Michigan, began residency there and finished training at the University of Washington.
L. Anthony Cirillo, MD, FACEP, Dr. Cirillo serves as the Director of Government Affairs for US Acute Care Solutions and continues to work clinically for USACS at the Advent Dade City Hospital. He is a past Chair of ACEP’s Federal Government Affairs, State Legislative and Regulatory and Membership Committees. Dr. Cirillo also currently serves on the Emergency Medicine Action Fund (EMAF) and National Emergency Medicine PAC (NEMPAC) Board of Trustees. Dr. Cirillo is the 2018 recipient of ACEP’s Collin C. Rorrie, Jr. Health Policy Award and will be delivering the Colin C. Rorrie, Jr. lecture at ACEP19. He earned his medical degree at the University of Vermont College of Medicine in Burlington, VT and completed his residency in emergency medicine at UMASS Medical Center in Worcester, MA.
John T. Finnell, MD, FACEP, FACMI, is an emergency physician at Indiana University in Indianapolis. He serves as the fellowship program director of clinical informatics, as well as a teaching faculty member. Dr. Finnell is a past-chair of the American Medical Informatics Association Academic Forum. He also is a senior case examiner reviewer for the American Board of Emergency Medicine. Dr. Finnell earned his medical degree from the University of Vermont in Burlington and completed his residency in emergency medicine at the University of California, San Francisco-Fresno.
Alison Haddock, MD, FACEP, is an assistant professor of emergency medicine at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. Dr. Haddock is a published research author, public speaker and advocate on topics that include health policy, physician wellness and a number of state and federal legislative issues. She attended medical school at Cornell University Medical College and completed her emergency medicine residency at the University of Michigan.
Aisha (Liferidge) Terry, MD, MPH, FACEP, is an associate professor of emergency medicine and health policy at the George Washington University School of Medicine and Milken Institute School of Public Health in Washington, DC. She is the senior advisor to the George Washington University Department of Emergency Medicine Health Policy Fellowship and chief executive officer of the Minority Women in Science Foundation (MWSF), a non-profit organization that empowers the dreams of future leaders with interest in science careers. She obtained her Medical Doctor degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and her Master of Public Health degree from the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health.
