Medicaid Health Plan Sponsors and Participates in Events Aimed at Fighting Food Insecurity in Palm Beach and Miami-Dade Counties

December 21 2021 – AmeriHealth Caritas Florida, a Medicaid managed care plan serving seven Florida counties, is committed to tackling food insecurity in southeastern Florida, especially during this holiday season. Since its very beginning, AmeriHealth Caritas Florida has supported organizations fighting hunger throughout its service area.

In recent months, as part of its aim to bolster health equity and support marginalized communities, the plan has continued to collaborate with communities and local non-profit organizations in addressing hunger by:

  • Sponsoring CROS Ministries’ Hustle to End Hunger 5K in Lake Worth.
  • Volunteering at CROS Ministries’ Lake Worth food pantry outreach, and contributing small hand sanitizer bottles on a clip for participants, to support the organization’s weekly food distribution process.
  • Packing and distributing food at Miami-Dade County Project P.E.A.C.E.’s November and December monthly food drive-thru distribution events in Miami’s Goulds neighborhood.
  • Donating 700 tote bags to Urban League of Palm Beach County as part of its annual Thanksgiving food distribution. This donation assisted in getting turkeys and boxes of fresh vegetables to more than 700 low-income families struggling with food security issues.

According to Feeding America, 1 in 8 Floridians, including 1 in 6 children, faces hunger.[i] A healthy diet comprising a variety of nutritious foods is essential to every person’s physical and mental health.[ii]

“Food security is one of the broader social determinants of health that we strive to address every day,” said AmeriHealth Caritas Florida Market President Kathy Warner. “During this holiday season, we are doing even more to help address these broader challenges faced by the communities we serve. And we are proud to join organizations which share our commitment.”
