May 1, 2019 – Best-selling author James Patterson was named the 2019 recipient of the “Joe DiMaggio American Icon Award” at a fundraiser for Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. Patterson, a Palm Beach resident, was recognized by the children’s hospital’s nonprofit foundation for representing the values its namesake stood for and contributions that have influenced American society.
The award was presented at an event at the Diplomat Beach Resort in Hollywood. It was attended by nearly 1,000 people and raised nearly $600,000 for programs, services, and facilities at the children’s hospital. Author Andrew Gross conducted an informal interview with Patterson on stage at the fundraiser and Brian Jackson, president of Envision Physician Services, presented the award.
Patterson becomes the 7th recipient of the prestigious award, following former U.S. President Bill Clinton, basketball legends Earvin “Magic” Johnson and Pat Riley, music’s Gloria and Emilio Estefan, and baseball’s Derek Jeter.
In addition to being one of the world’s bestselling authors and a trusted storyteller, Patterson has given over a million books to schoolkids, more than $40 million to support education, and endowed more than 5,000 college scholarships for teachers.
