During the span of four days, approximately 3,800 Baptist Health South Florida employees and their families volunteered 7,000 hours of their free time in two hour shifts of 165 people to assemble one million meals for the people of Haiti. Baptist Health South Florida coordinated the four-day meal-a-thon to raise consciousness for relief and recovery efforts for the earthquake ravaged country.
“It was so gratifying to see employees from practically every department represented at the four-day event, from board members and doctors and nurses to social workers, environmental staff and techs,” said Wayne Brackin, executive vice president and chief operating officer of Baptist Health South Florida. “It was a great team effort by everyone involved during those four days that had 23 shifts staffed with 3,800 Baptist Health volunteers accumulating 7,000-plus hours to reach our goal of one million meals. And we got it done with 5,000 meals to spare.” The humanitarian effort was the product of a unique collaboration between Baptist Health, its employees and the Feed My Starving Children organization. More than $170,000 was committed to purchase the ingredients for the one million meals through Feed My Starving Children. The meals consisted of packages of rice, soy protein, chicken broth and vitamins.
